Uncle Bill’s Barn Owl Investing came about when I realized I wanted to write down the results of my 30-some years of investing trial and error so that the next generations of my family could learn from it. Not do exactly as I did (talk about the long way around!) but take from my story the things that apply to their lives and the very different world they live in now, and make good financial decisions for their future and the future of their children.
And then, since I was going to all the trouble of writing it all down, why not share with anyone else who could benefit from those same lessons? So, the blog was born. But it needed a good name…
“Why Barn Owl?”
I want this blog to convey investing information that is a combination of facts, lessons learned, humor, and common sense - where today’s news gets viewed through the lens of years of experience and, of course, some humor (and sometimes donuts). That brought to mind my father-in -law and his group of buddies. They would meet once a week in his barn to catch up with friends, discuss the state of the world, play games, and share stories while drinking coffee and having a donut or two. They called themselves the Barn Owls. Despite living in a small town, they had a lot of different experiences – WWII fighter pilot, mailman, journalist, etc. It was a wide array of perspectives and when I was able to listen in, it generally made a lot of sense to me. I admired them for their openness, long friendships, and welcoming attitude towards occasional guests like me.
So, the Barn Owl name fit quite well with my goals and in homage to the original Barn Owls, I hope you find some nuggets of investing wisdom you can apply to your own life and we can share stories, laughs, amd maybe even a donut.
Uncle Bill lives with his wonderful wife Catherine and Carly the cat. He hopes to have enough posts here eventually to fill a book – specifically, that one he’s been telling Catherine he would write one day…
